It’s what they do. #Flashfiction #99words

February 2, 2017 prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story about a rock in the road. It can be physical, adding to a plot twist, or it can be metaphorical for a barrier or hardship. Go where you find the rock.

This is my first attempt at 99-word flash fiction. Thank you Charli for the great prompt and thank you Geoff for introducing me to it. This is going to be fun…

“You don’t stop,” he said, “however big it is, hear me? You find a way around it, hell, you back up and come straight home but whatever happens, you don’t stop!”

“Dad, I hear you, I won’t stop!”

“I mean it. It’s what they do. They put a big rock in the middle of a deserted road, you get out of the car and before you know it, they drag you into the nearest bushes and—”

“Jesus, Dad!”

“I’m sorry sweetheart, I’m just trying to protect you.”

“Come along then!”

He sighed. “You know I have to work.”

Although this is a work of fiction, it was inspired by real stories that have been known to happen in Morocco. Stories that make me sick to the stomach but stories that should nonetheless be told.

Thanks for reading.
